Your first travel contract, part one: the licensing timeline
You can start a first travel contract only once a board lets you practice in the contract’s state, so your timeline is the sum of four waits: your exam date, the day your score reaches the board, the board’s own processing, and the facility’s credentialing. No national body publishes a total for all of that, so build your own from the dates each body does publish, starting with the exam.
When can I sit the exam, and who decides?
The board you apply to decides. The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy says “Each licensing authority has its own eligibility criteria for licensure and for taking the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE).” The NPTE runs on fixed dates, not on demand. FSBPT’s dates and deadlines page lists a registration deadline and a jurisdiction approval deadline for every test date, and defines the second as “the latest date that your state board can notify FSBPT that you are eligible for the examination.” It also warns that “Some states may have earlier application deadlines.”
So the first date on your timeline belongs to your board, not to FSBPT: apply early enough for the board to approve you before the deadline for the test date you want. Miss it, and you wait for the next fixed date.
OTs book differently. NBCOT says that once it approves your exam application you receive an Authorization to Test letter, and “The ATT letter is active for 90 days.” SLPs take the Praxis and send their score the way their board asks.
When does my score reach the board?
For PTs and PTAs, FSBPT publishes the day scores go to the boards for each test date. On its 2026 table, the PT exam on October 27-28 has scores reported to jurisdictions on November 4. Its candidate handbook adds that “Your scores are automatically reported to the jurisdiction you designated when you registered for the NPTE.” Any other board needs a score transfer, which our guide to choosing your first license state explains.
For OTs, the NBCOT exam handbook says “Scores are released according to the NBCOT Exam Scoring Calendar,” and that a board “will NOT automatically receive a score unless a Score Transfer service has been ordered.” Order the transfer before you test and, it says, the score is sent within 2-3 business days of the exam being scored. It also reminds you that “Completing the NBCOT Certification Exam Application is not the same as applying for state licensure.”
How long will the board take to issue my license?
Each board answers that for itself, and our licensure guide for new grads keeps the steps by discipline. What you control is the paperwork a board waits on: an application filed before the exam, your program’s proof of graduation sent straight to the board, and your score routed to that same board.
Some boards let a graduate work before the full license posts, on a temporary license or a limited permit, and each sets its own conditions. Our sister site lists the boards’ temporary license and permit rules. If you plan around one, read what happens to it if you do not pass before you sign anything.
SLPs have one more step to line up: the Clinical Fellowship. ASHA tells fellows to “Contact your state regulatory agency/licensing board for licensure requirements,” so ask your board what license you need before the fellowship starts.
When you know your exam date and want a first contract planned around your license, ask a ProTherapy recruiter: Find my next contract.
When can I add a compact privilege?
Only after your home-state license is issued. The PT Compact Commission requires you to “Hold a current, valid PT or PTA license in your home state,” and your home state must be a member that is issuing privileges. It sets no waiting period after that: “There is no requirement regarding the length of time a PT or PTA must hold a license or be practicing/working to be eligible to obtain a compact privilege.”
The purchase itself is quick. The Commission says that for an eligible therapist, “in most cases, compact privileges will be issued within minutes of purchase,” though a state may require its jurisprudence exam first, so check each state’s requirement before the day you plan to buy. OTs should check the OT Compact for whether their states are issuing privileges yet, and SLPs the ASLP Compact.
What happens between the license and my first day?
Credentialing: the facility’s and the agency’s checks that you hold the license, certifications and health records the assignment needs. The month-by-month timeline shows how to gather those documents while you study, so they never wait on your license.
This is part one of a five-part guide. When the license is in sight, part two covers what facilities expect from a new grad.
Frequently asked questions
When does FSBPT send my NPTE score to the board?
On the date FSBPT publishes for your test date. For the October 27-28, 2026 PT exam, its table shows scores reported to jurisdictions on November 4, and the jurisdiction you designated when you registered receives them automatically.
Does my state board get my NBCOT score automatically?
No. NBCOT says a state board will not receive a score unless a Score Transfer has been ordered, and that applying for the exam is not the same as applying for state licensure.
Can I buy a PT Compact privilege as soon as my home-state license is issued?
Yes, if your home state is a member that is issuing privileges and you meet the other criteria. The PT Compact Commission sets no minimum time you must hold a license, though a state may require its jurisprudence exam first.
